Preparing for a Website Audit
By April 2026, the State of Vermont’s digital content needs to meet the updated Americans with Disabilities Act requirements under Title II: Digital Accessibility to meet WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance. Complete the actions below to prepare your website for an accessibility audit and site-specific remediation work. These are outlined in order of priority.
TIP: Think Before You Add
Make sure all new content that is added to your site is accessible. To save time and avoid future remediation work, make sure any new content is accessible before it’s posted. Develop a plan internally to make sure that content is reviewed and passes the Word or Acrobat Pro Accessibility checker.

STEP: Complete a Site Inventory
Before a website audit or future remediation or archiving work, it is essential to inventory the content that is currently on your site. The inventory will outline all pages and documents. It is important to complete this task prior to remediating or archiving any content so you will have a record of what was publicly posted or available. While this step is a time investment, it will provide you with a complete record of all of your site's contents prior to significant changes.
The inventory will also ensure that no pages or content are overlooked and will serve as a checklist to identify content types and prioritize areas that need accessibility updates. The inventory will also help you track your accessibility progress by breaking down remediation into manageable sections, making monitoring and ensuring compliance across the entire site easier.
To complete the Site Inventory step, select one of the following options.
Option 1: Complete the Site Inventory Template
Use the Microsoft Excel template to complete an inventory of site pages and documents. Visit the Site Inventory and Mapping page for a link to download the template and step-by-step editing instructions.
An additional resource to accompany Option 1, is the Visual Site Map template. Once completed, you can use the Site Inventory template to generate the Visual Site Map template and build a graphic representation of how each of the pages connects to one another.
